Rally Liepāja secures funding, will run on May 29-31

On Tuesday, November 5, the Latvian government finalized the decision to cover costs associated with the license for organizing FIA European Rally Championship round Rally Liepāja. With that, the Latvian event, which had been preliminarily included in the 2020 calendar, has confirmed its place in the FIA European Rally Championship, with the rally set to take place on May 29-31.

“I would like to thank the Gvernment of Latvia for valuing the gains received by organizing such a high level event in Latvia, providing the economic stimulus for Liepāja and the whole region Kurzeme, as well as pushing forward the recognition of Latvia on a global scale by the means of Eurosport TV channels worldwide.

Since 2013, the first year an event of the reorganized FIA European Rally Championship was hosted in Latvia, Rally Liepāja has established its significance in both Latvian and European context – this year, for the first time, it was organized in an especially large territory, stretching from Talsi to Liepāja. That made it possible to include in the itinerary the most challenging Latvian special stages, which was appreciated by our international partners, who are looking forward to returning here. For that, the event will retain its current format, covering the area from Talsi to Liepāja and continuing showcasing the Latvian rally traditions in the highest level of competition,” says RA Events director Raimonds Strokšs.

“In these seven years, Rally Liepāja has become a valued and welcome tradition, which gathers world class rally drivers, their teams, supporters, and rally enthusiasts here on the Kurzeme region roads. This is an event that showcases Liepāja to more than 10 million viewers in 59 countries that broadcast Eurosport, and it will be our responsibility to make the best out of this opportunity, showing that Liepāja is an open, modern, exciting, and interesting city to the whole Europe. The government decision to cover the license costs means that this tradition will be strengthened next year, and I am thrilled that the Latvian rally traditions will be showcased at the highest possible international level,” adds Liepāja city council vice-chairman Uldis Sesks.
